Pontiac was a brand of automobiles that was owned by General Motors (GM). The brand was established in 1926 and named after the Native American chief Pontiac, who led a rebellion against the British in the Great Lakes region in the 1760s.
In its early years, Pontiac produced affordable, mid-range cars that were popular with American consumers. During World War II, Pontiac shifted its production to military vehicles and airplane engines to support the war effort. After the war, the brand continued to produce popular models, such as the Chieftain and the Catalina.
